Test Driving A New Rewards Credit Card From American Express

This post was sponsored by American Express.

If you’ve read this site for a while, you’ll know I’m a big fan of using a credit card to earn cash back, gift cards or travel rewards.  So I was excited when American Express approached me to test-drive their new card.

While most credit cards are inflexible in the way you can earn and redeem rewards, the Choice and ChoicePlus Cards from American Express are unique to the Canadian rewards card market because they allow you to choose where you want to earn double points.

The Choice and ChoicePlus Cards from American Express

With the new Choice and ChoicePlus Cards from American Express, you can earn points everywhere you shop, plus you’ll get to choose five places where you can earn double points on your spending.

You’ll choose your five places from a list of over 100 retailers.  This can be anything from your favourite clothing and shoe stores, to the hardware store where you’re buying materials to renovate your home, to the coffee shop that you stop into every day on your way to work.

As you collect your points, you’ll get to choose how you’d like to use them.  You can redeem points for store gift cards, merchandise, electronics, and concert tickets or use them to pay for a trip using TripFlex rewards.

I like the fact that I can customize my rewards program.  I’m a pretty loyal shopper, so I tend to stick to the same stores, restaurants and gas stations.  With ChoicePlus, now I can earn double points at the five places I’ve chosen.

With retail partners like Walmart, Amazon, Chapters, Toys R Us, Canadian Tire, Starbucks, Esso, Petro-Canada, Shell, Telus, Rogers, Sobeys and Safeway to pick from, it’ll be tough to narrow down to five.

The 7,500 point welcome bonus is nice too – that’s enough for a $50 gift card!

I signed up for the ChoicePlus Card earlier this month, so I’m just waiting for it to arrive.  I’m going to test it out for a few months and keep you posted on how it goes.

I just recently got an American Express Gold Card, despite the fact that I highly dislike annual fees (the first year is free and I’ll cancel it before I pay the next fee). When I’ve spent $500 I’ll get Halo 4 and two years of XBox Live. At undiscounted prices, that’s over $200 with tax. It’s literally the two things I wanted for myself for Xmas, and I’m getting them for free. Yeah I’m kind of hard to buy for.
