What’s New Around The Blogosphere: April 29th, 2011

Finding a place to rent for two months is turning out to be a lot more difficult than we thought.  Apparently landlords aren’t too keen on short term rentals to people with pets…so that’s two strikes against us right off the bat.

And for all of this talk of renting instead of owning, I’m not seeing much of a discount on rent in our city.  Most of the places we’ve looked at are asking for as much per month as we currently pay on our mortgage.  The good news is that our new house is still on schedule for an August 1st possession date, even with the rotten weather this Spring.

Enough complaining, let’s take a look at some interesting articles from the personal finance world this week:

    Awe! If you were in Vancouver you could rent my basement suite for two months, I don’t mind :)

    Good luck!

    There’s more cost to owning than just the mortgage (indeed, with low interest rates and high property taxes in many cities, the mortgage is only about half). What’s the monthly rent to price multiple? That’s a pretty quick measure. In London, ON it’s about 170X, and about 220X in Toronto.

    Anyway, have you tried looking at furnished units? It might not help with the pet issue (can someone pet sit for two months?) but they tend to be geared towards short term rentals. Unfortunately it’ll probably be twice as much: more cost to rent the furniture, and to store your own as well.

      @Potato
      Just a quick calculation but it looks like the rent to price multiple here is 165X.

      We’ve tried quite a few places and no luck so far. If one unit accepts pets, they don’t want the short term…and vice-versa.

      I think we just have to realize that these two months aren’t going to be ideal and we’ll either have to pay more than we want to, or live in less than perfect conditions.
